A “digital” beginning
Prof. Dr. Ashraf Mansour, GUC Prime Founder & Chairman of Board of Trustees and H.E. Bernd Erbel Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Egypt invited a great number of guests to attend the Inauguration Ceremony of the GUC Campus Radio & TV.

A large number of VIPs, Ministers and German guests gathered at the new C-Building on GUC premises on November 20th, 2007 to attend the Digital Media Campus (DMC) Inauguration Ceremony. The Ceremony was attended by the GUC partners Deutsche Welle (DW) and Fraunhofer Institute who came especially to share with us this spectacular event.

It started with a small project called “Good Morning GUC”, this show reflected students’ lives and activities at the GUC. After some time, the idea began to grow until it developed to a bigger project called the Digital Media Campus (DMC). Luckily, this project is the first of its kind among all universities in Egypt.

The Digital Media Campus is based on the latest multimedia broadcasting technology, DVB-H Technology. The DVB-H is a new transmission system for multimedia reception on mobile receivers.

This will allow the students to listen to the radio through mobile phones and iPods. However, during the current first phase its possible only via intranet streaming, meaning that students can use the labs, as well as their laptops everywhere on campus.

DMC was developed by DW and Fraunhofer Institute in Germany. Fraunhofer Institute was responsible for establishing the studio technically with the help of the GUC Engineers Mostafa Nawito and Shady Nader. The vision of a multimedia chain ranging from the home cinema to the mobile pocket player is now becoming reality. Streaming - playing back multimedia data while they are being transferred through a network - is a key to future multimedia applications. It can broadcast radio channels as well as TV channels and interactive services, which saves cost and power.

As for Deutsche Welle (DW), it’s a German international broadcaster that broadcasts news and information on shortwave, Internet and satellite radio in 29 languages (DW-RADIO). It has a satellite television service (DW-TV) that is available in four languages, and there is also DW-WORLD.DE, a 30-language online news website. Deutsche Welle, which in English means “German Wave”, is similar to international broadcasters like the BBC World Service and Voice of America.

The four of us, Mai Ghorab, Safa Al-Motasem, Iman Ateya and Moushira Adel were chosen by the GUC management to coordinate this project form the editorial and production side. Hence, we had to get started for the new tasks. GUC coordinated with Mittweida University, and we traveled to attend a two-week summer course in journalism and media.

Afterwards, we had the opportunity to attend an intensive course at the DW-Akademie in Bonn, covering everything from program planning, doing media research, choosing topics and music to even practicing in real DW Radio studios. It was a fruitful training for us, guided by Dr. Helmut Osang (Head of Asia Division at the DW-Akademie), who shared with us a lot of his knowledge in this field and took us through the whole practical aspects of managing a radio station. Furthermore, we were lucky to experience real live broadcasts to learn how they prepare for an On-Air show.

On the other hand, we had the chance to meet with a great number of journalists from different countries with different backgrounds, share their journalistic experiences and get a full image of the media techniques around the world.

The station’s aim is to provide students with a wide range of media skills and experience and to become a research institution that offers valuable media and training services. Therefore students’ involvement is crucial in this project. Many students applied to join the project, each chose the field he/she were interested in (presenting, editing, reporting, shooting...etc).

After our training in Germany, we carried out a screening workshop at the GUC to choose the students were interested and capable to joining us in this project. Together with the chosen students, the DW conducted two more trainings: a journalistic and a technical training.

This project will help students gain experience for their future career lives by developing their media skills. It helps them also gain practical working experience in a real working atmosphere.
